This is a bit of an aside to the main content of the SharePoint Conference but it was mentioned by Steve Ballmer in the keynote and I thought it was quite interesting. I also get asked this a lot when people ask me what I do for a living!
So, what is SharePoint? Simple – SharePoint 2010 is the Business Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise and the Web. Any clearer? I didn’t think so.
The crux of the matter is that SharePoint is different things to different people because of the sheer size of the product. It does not simply focus on one type of solution, such as Document Management for example, but rather provides a whole host of different solutions in an integrated platform. It is this integration, or convergence of the business workspace, that I believe can be seen as the unique selling point of SharePoint. SharePoint is unique in the market place because of the integration it provides between different systems, teams or solutions etc.
Particularly with SharePoint 2010 it is also now putting People at the centre of this integration. Features such as the greatly improved My Site and the managed metadata service will help drive a highly personalised and targeted experience.
