Microsoft SharePoint 2010 – Wow

I’ve just taken a look at the ‘sneak peak‘ videos that Microsoft have released. This is my first chance to see it and I’m really surprised (in a good way!) at just how much it has changed in the front-end. I can see there’s lot of changes behind the scenes too, but I’m really pleased that so much effort has gone into the look and feel. I can’t wait to see the online office applications if this is anything to go by.

After the first look, highlights for me are:

  • Multiple browser support – no more being tied to IE to make the most of SharePoint
  • Improved WCM – looks like it’s going to be a really nice WYSIWYG experience
  • Visio Services – Visio just got the Excel Web Access treatment
  • The Ribbon Bar – it now ‘feels’ like a serious application
  • Offline capability – Grrove has now been upgraded and renamed to SharePoint Workspace for a Colligo style offline experience

An honourable mention goes to the support for Office Client Themes too – perhaps the nightmare days with crazy CSS are over?

I strongly recommend checking it out for yourselves. If you don’t have the time to watch all of it – use the play buttons in the ‘Feature Highlights’ list to jump to the good bits.
